Maranatha Christian Academy's girls basketball team recorded their first win in their inaugural season last weekend over the LIFE Lions 62-32. Maranatha roared out to a 30-2 lead midway through the second period, and at halftime the score was 45-6.
Maranatha freely substituted from the bench in the second half and all players who suited up for the game had good playing time. The Lions were more competitive in the second half and added 26 additional points. Scoring for Maranatha were Chrissy Mulee, Kayley Bruce, Hannah Nichols, and Taylor Ring.
Boys Team Records Second Win
Maranatha's boys team recorded their second win of the season, defeating the Lions 68-54. Although Maranatha led from the start and never surrendered the lead, the game was quite competitive. The boys led 18-11 at the end of the first period and increased their lead to 36-24 at halftime. In the second half, the boys again increased their lead to 13 points. In the fourth period Maranatha's shooting beyond the three-point line cooled and the Lions pulled within 9 points. Inside shooting then picked up and the Mustangs finished with their largest point spread of the game.
The boys were led in scoring by Chase Logan with 23 points, Ian Nichols with 15, and Matt Bruce with 11. Also contributing to the team effort were Quentin Hoffman with 8 points, JD Abell with 5, Zach Miller with 4, and Ben Forney with 2.
"This was a good warmup for the Cono Lady Warrior Basketball Tournament in two weeks. The way we played together today, the girls definitely have a chance to do very well at Cono," said administrator and boys assistant coach Bill Nichols. "The boys also did an excellent job against a much taller team. It was certainly an all-around team effort."
